Usually, I wouldn’t be a fan of a franchise like this. However, I have been watching these movies since they began (with the rare exception of “Tokyo Drift”). The plot surrounding each individual movie seems intriguing to me. With each movie, we are introduced to new characters who play a decent role within the movie’s “universe”. And this movie was no exception.
The story of this installment involves Dom (Vin Diesel) seemingly betraying his team after a mission. At first, his team and family are confused. They initially think he “went rogue”. But, a cyber-terrorist known only as Cipher (Charlize Theron) seems to be influencing Dom’s behavior. So, it is up to his fellow teammates (Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Ludacris, Nathalie Emmanuel) to figure out not only how to get Dom back on their side, but also how to stop the cyber-terrorist from winning. Also helping out is the mysterious Mr. Nobody (Kurt Russell), who has employed a younger & inexperienced lackey to help out.
This was a great action movie. I, personally, love any movie with a great chase scene, whether it be on foot or in a car. The chase scenes and explosions were a great combination for almost any action movie. Add to that, the humor delivered by most of the cast of the movie. The dialogue delivery was very well-written. I loved the camaraderie between Deckard (Jason Statham) and Hobbs (Dwayne Johnson).
But, these films are almost nothing without their respective plot twists. “The Fate of the Furious” did deliver a good plot twist, however it didn’t really pack the necessary “punch” that I would have expected from any other movie with a plot twist. Maybe I needed to remember various plot points of some of the previous movies. Maybe there was an essential scene that ultimately found its way on the cutting room floor. Who knows? While the plot twist was good, it just wasn’t as good as it could have been.
While I have always found Tyrese Gibson to be one of the weaker players in the franchise, there seemed to be something more likeable about him in this movie. He was actually funny in this one. So, if this is the last movie in the franchise, then I would he finished on a positive note. The rest of the cast played their respective parts perfectly. While the franchise did have a good run, I really don’t want them to make too many movies to run it into the ground.
My Rating: B+
